The Story

The Pink Star, now known as the CTF Pink Star and originally as the Steinmetz Pink, is a 59.60 carat oval mixed-cut diamond graded Fancy Vivid Pink and Internally Flawless by the Gemological Institute of America. It is the largest diamond known to have received the Vivid Pink grade. The stone was bought by Chow Tai Fook at auction in 2017 and renamed in the company's honor.

De Beers mined the 132.5 carat rough in South Africa in 1999. The Steinmetz Diamonds Group cut the stone over roughly 20 months and unveiled it as the Steinmetz Pink in Monaco on May 29, 2003. That year it was also shown in the Smithsonian's "The Splendor of Diamonds" exhibition, and in 2007 it was renamed the Pink Star.

At Sotheby's Geneva on November 13, 2013, the diamond sold for CHF 76,325,000, about US$83.2 million including fees, to New York diamond cutter Isaac Wolf, but the buyer defaulted and the sale was not completed. On April 4, 2017, Sotheby's Hong Kong sold it for HK$553,037,500, US$71.2 million, to jeweler Chow Tai Fook. Sotheby's described the result as a record for any diamond or jewel at auction and a record for any work sold at auction in Asia.
